Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has signed a 17-month agreement with UNWTO to develop policies, regulations and strategies needed to takeQatar’s booming tourism into the future keeping in mid its 2030 vision of sustainable tourism.

UNWTO aims to develop QTA as a consistent and locally relevant monitoring and quality control system across the wide range oftourism activities which will be based on international benchmarks. Also keeping in mind the World cup in 2022, this will help Qatar develop as a well-planned, high quality and reliable tourism industry.

This strategy lays major emphasis onQatar’s Carbon footprint, energy and water consumption while keeping in mind the natural habitats like wildlife and marine reserves. The process involves making a policy framework regulating its institutions, standards and codes of conduct for all its tourism business activities. These measures will help and guide developmental planning for implementing environmentally sustainable practise and also creating guidelines for foreign and direct financial investment practises inQatar.

Initially, it will be aimed at Qatar’s five major tourist activities which are namely desert safaris and camps; tour guides; tourism investment, event management companies; retail, wholesale, DMC and both inbound and outbound travel agencies and theme/ amusement parks. The second phase will cover destination marketing themes, hotel energy systems and related sustainability areas.

It must be noted thatQatarhas a unique advantage since it has very few old hotels and thus, cost, energy and water-saving technologies can be implemented from the early stages.
