In this article Muzaffar Rizvi writes about the Dh1 billion green-development project; a “sustainable city” coming up in Dubai and expected to be completed by 2015. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2013 and deliver about 100 villas and townhouses by end of 2014.

The project was announced at the recent International Property Show in Dubai, which was attended by over 250 exhibitors and participants from UAE, Egypt, Canada, Brazil, Turkey, the Philippines, Thailand and Morocco.

The sustainable city will have an environmental sciences university, a school, a commercial centre, a shopping mall and a deluxe sustainable hotel and resort with a world-class natural spa centre. It will also include a Planetarium and a grass Amphitheatre for hosting events and for promoting tourism.

The most striking features of this Sustainable City are that residents will be entitled to a share in the local shopping mall and will get revenues to offset their maintenance and utility bills. There will also be a car-free zone and solar-powered golf carts for each house.

Such an initiative will help in reducing carbon emissions and save energy by becoming a zero waste city. It also illustrates how smart cities will increasingly have to look like in the future.
